How can art help us to live or transform ourselves as a spectator of a work, as an artist, or in the context of psychotherapy? The concept of catharsis is often mentioned when it comes to addressing the question of the benefits of art, from the point of view the artist and the viewer. This concept was described by Aristotle, who thought that the violence of theatrical representations allowed the spectators to purge themselves of their excess of passions, and then to return more soothed, better citizens, to the affairs of the city. “In so doing, by proxy of extreme passions, they would get rid of a dangerous violence for civilization,” explained the philosopher Charles Pépin in his essay. This catharsis phenomenon explains our interest in violent films, Scarface for example: looking at Al Pacino to bargain everything that moves to the automatic rifle by pushing enraged screams would allow us to exteriorize the violence that is in us, to rid us of it.
