"Stray Katz in Sunset on a Carnival Tuesday Afternoon"
Ashelle Waddell
Cubsim/ abstract/ Oil/ - 20 Inches x 30 Inches
This painting was done mid December, 2001, started just before Christmas. Starting off as scribbles on a piece of paper, it quickly developed into something more. People always assume, because it is done in red that it represents some sort of anger, frustration, or pain, but it does not. When the initial sketch was complete, I knew it could only be done in red.
Actually I was in quite a happy mood while working on this piece. Between the buzz of excitement that only Christmas can create, and the release of Dido’s hit “Here With Me”, which I listened to a lot while painting, it was impossible for me to feel anything but good.
Again the name was generated from the various comments I received from people, as they tried to decipher what I was trying to portray. Many saw the little characters either as cats, or as a representation of our national carnival. With the majority of people getting out of it, the sprit of Trinidad Carnival, I decided on the name.
