Deus Ex Machina: An unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, esp. a contrived plot device in a play or novel. This painting is a self portrait. The spine of the book is actually my open arms. As I lie an open book, it is sometimes difficult to separate myself from all the judgments. I have personally reached a point in this journey, where I welcome the flame. It is empowering, and only causes me to reach deeper within and strive forward, stronger than ever. Any artist knows that every painting is a self portrait, and that a negative comment about their work can become personal, whether intended or not. I struggled with whether or not to comment on this piece because of its intimacy, however I feel it is important that people understand the power they hold in affecting others as well as themselves. As most people show enthusiasm for our hard work, there are always critics who try to discourage the passion that "we kids" have. To be successful, everyone must experience their deus ex machina, their moment of clarity, and realize that outside negativities can only effect them if they allow them to. Hopefully expressing this through paint can encourage others to pursue the things that may not be understood by all.
