"The rhino complex"
Altmayer Bruno
Oil On Canvas - 24 Inches x 24 Inches
The choice of some countries, among the richest, among the most careless or unconscious, among the most disrespectful of the planet and of future generations, has led humanity to this bitter observation: the dream of luxuriance is more than a chain of disillusionments, losses and profits left to the brink of indifference. The mappemond draws the contours of the three main nuclear waste instigators and providers, the United States, France and Japan. The world's trash is concentrated there. The timeless residue lies open, the desert wins. He is alone, the one who poses as a wise man, contemplating on the steps of indignity, contempt for the last slags of a past world. The waste that will have a long future on our beautiful Earth, a very long future... As the last Rhinoceros disappear, witnesses to the time of this abundance, this profusion of resources and this richness in diversity. The Tiger, the keeper of the gate of the underworld, is only one appearance in the memory of man.
A few figures * :
The reprocessing of the fuel continues at La Hague, increasing the plutonium stock year after year, of which a hundredth of a milligram may be sufficient to cause lung cancer. No less than 55 tons of this dangerous substance, which no one knows what to do, are stored there. Radioactive discharges from the Hague and Sellafield reprocessing plants in the UK alone generate in 10 years a collective dose of one-seventh of the dose produced by the Chernobyl accident.
This recovered plutonium represents only 1% of the spent fuel, 95% of which is reprocessing uranium and 4% of the most hazardous nuclear waste.
Despite the reprocessing, the National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management (ANDRA) lists 1121 sites where 1.252.000 m3 of radioactive waste are stored, of which 4% are "long-lived high activity" (several million years). To bury them in Bure in Meuse would be the solution, we are told... Once again, it will be future generations who will pay the mark.
