Alfred La Piana was born and raised in New York and has lived in El Paso for 20 years where he has since acquired an art degree and a master’s degree as an instructional specialist. He studied art for two years at the Art Student’s League of New York City under the renowned African-American artist, Hughie Lee-Smith, where he swapped drawings with the celebrity, Peter Falk. He also taught at El Paso Community College and art in North Carolina. He has been a member of the El Paso Art Association for a number of years and his work has also been exhibited in El Paso’s International Art Museum, Piano City, Sunland Park Mall and other places. Many of his works sold in El Paso, New York, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and overseas. La Piana served in the US Navy where he learned to capture the majestic spirit of the sea on canvas. One painting, which was exhibited at the El Paso International Museum and in the Suffolk Museum of Art in Virginia entitled Redemption, was created from a dream he had of being desperately lost and rescued by the hand of God. His subject matter and style is highly diversified (still life, land and seascapes). He also enjoys doing oil portraits of all types. Presently, he plans on teaching art in Virginia.
