"Alone?" asked Hi'iaka again. "It is no fun to talk to my shadow. It doesen't answer.

Then Pele called her own serving woman. "Go with my sister," she commanded and turned again to tend her fires.

The two journeyed. Hi'iaka sang with joy as they walked under lehua trees covered with blossoms. Then she was quiet, watching the birds gathering nectar from the blossoms.

Suddenly the serving woman whispered, "I hear the grunt of a pig! What is it a pig of the land or sea?"

"Both!" laughed Hi'iaka softly. "You hear the grunt of a pig fish. Someone is taking an offering to Pele."

A moment later a young woman appeared. She was carrying a striped pig fish and a small struggling black pig. "greeting to you woman in green." said Hi'iaka.

Hi'iaka was Pele's younger sister. She was beautiful and brave and Pele loved her dearly. But Hi'iaka was different from Pele. The Goddess of the volcano liked to destroy, but Hi'iaka loved people and wanted to help them. She had girl companions from whom she learned to dance the hula and make leis.

From them she learned the dangers which threatened people on her island of Hawaii. She heard of the giant mo'o, of man-eating sharks, of evil spirits and of a terrible whirlwind which destroyed homes and gardens of men.

"I shall go on a journey," Hi'iaka said. "I shall travel around this island of Hawaii and destroy these evil beings. I shall make Hawaii a safe home for people. Who will come with me?"

Having it's origin in the drumbeat of the Hula the word Pa means "to beat time with hands". I just created a new domain name for my website where a personal vision of art is presented in the spirit of aloha.

Waho Ka Manawa means "Outside of Time". The mountain at the bottom of the image is Anahola Mountain on the island of Kauai. Some legends sat that the mountain stands outside of time. Laka Hula Goddess as visualized at Ke'e on the north side of Kauai. Some legends say that this was the brirhplace of the hula. It is considered to be a sacred place where hula dancers come to make offerings. It is believed that great dancers aren't merely inspired. They invite the dieties to enter themselves. This is so the mana of dieties, birds, animals, trees, the sea, wind, lightning, and rain could be brought forth. IMAGES FROM THE GREEN SHACK

I've recently re-edited and I am currently downloading images from "the green shack period" onto my ArtsCad gallery. These are soft pastels and a few paintings that were created during a four year period when I spent a good deal of time living and making art in a small green shack. It is located on the property of a friend in Anahola on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Infused into the art is my enjoyment of that time and place. The work is presented with the hope of sharing some of that enjoyment. Life and art can indeed be good when art is life and life is art.

From a remote Anahola studio in Kauai, Hawaii comes vivid pastel images inspired by life experiences on a beautiful island. Over the next few weeks I will be adding new images to my gallery. These were created between the years 2000 and 2004. Many of these works are available for the first time. I would advise checking back often as the addition of new works will be random and variable, as time allows.
