I often ask myself why I paint. I wish I could tell you. I think it has a lot to do with the idea of creating more than anything else. I use paint because I love the smell and the color. The texture and the taste ....well yes...that is a story on it's own.
They say all Artists’ struggle. This is true. I struggled for 38 years to finally unleash this fiery phoenix. After years of raising 3 sons, a marriage that was insane and trying hard to be the responsible adult with a well paid job in labor and labor law (no kidding!), the reigns snapped and she was freed!
It was as if a a whole new book, never mind chapter began in my life. From being an outspoken, public person with a fiery temper and a raucous laugh, I think I have simmered down to a smoldering old dragon! Just kidding! I just don't get out as much as I used to because I spend my life painting!
I am intrigued by color and texture. I love light and what it does to this. I am inspired by color in any shape or form. I often joke and say, if I was a bird i would be a Magpie! If it's bright and shiny....I WANT IT! I want to be around color all the time and living in an Artists studio/warehouse! (It was never meant to be a warehouse...this just happened; when the 'mojo' strikes...I don't stop till I'm spent or I run out of canvas!
I believe that Art could be classified as an emotion. When I paint, I am aware of this all the time. I paint with my soul that connects with the soul of my subject. This probably sounds insane, but I truly feel a connection. I have painted hundreds and hundreds of paintings, but I remember each one. Each one bears a little of my soul.
I always ask, when someone looks at a painting..."how does it make you feel?". It is amazing how one painting will evoke different emotions in people. I love to hear someone "explain" a piece of my work (especially when they don't know I am the artist) it can be quite enlightening (sometimes hilarious!). I believe that a painting needs to evoke emotion.
Art is a way for me to show the beauty that I see, to whoever looks at it. My intention is to create an experience that will help you forget yourself for a moment. To take you away from your troubles and disappointments and into my world, just for a moment. Beauty is a reminder of perfection, and so a call to make ourselves and our world better.
