The fourteen steps to creating a marquetry .

Marquetry is a matter of patience . Martine Perry
January 24 2020

Marquetry is a matter of patience : the number of steps required to create a painting is proof of this .
1 . Choose a frame .
2 . Make a drawing on thick canson paper the size of the frame . The drawing must be very precise to facilitate cutting .
3. Cut a medium plate the size of the frame .
4 . Choose the species to harmonize the colors with the frame .
5 . Cust the canson paper piece by piece , replacing the paper with wood : this is the more important step wich represents 70% of the work . Fix the wood with adhesive tape .
6 . When wood has replaced paper , the painting is ready to be glued .
7 . Glue the medium with wood glue .
8 . Fix the plate of cut species on the medium with adhesive tape .
9 . Press for about 10 hours . The glue must'nt be completely dry to correct any problem during pressing , an overlap of two woods for example .
10 . Carefully remove the adhesive so as not to tear the fibers from the wood .
11 . We must'nt forget that we are working with sheets of wood 6/10th of a mn .
12. Sand with increasingly fine grain abrasives .
13 . Varnish with a spray varnish . Sand between each layer ( 3 or 4 layers are necessary depending on the species used ).
14 . Frame and put the hanging clips .
