How The Artist Lives On Through His Work

Immortality and the artist. Charles Griffith
July 9 2008

"The artist, and by that I mean the writer, the poet and the composer as well, comes closer than anyone to achieving a form of immortality through his work. You don't think of Thomas Edison every time you turn on an electric light, nor does Benjamin Franklin come to mind when you put on a pair of bifocals. But you cannot help reflecting upon Leonardo when you gaze upon the Mona Lisa, or of Michelangelo when confronted with the Sistine Chapel. The artist's work reflects his inner and outer lives in a way that the work of the inventor or engineer does not. So in a real sense, a part of the artist's spirit does continue to exist for others to experience, long after the artist is no more. Rembrandt's self-portraits and Beethoven's symphonies continue to enthrall us the same way they did for the generations of people who lived before us, keeping their creators very much in our minds and hearts. This is how powerful art can be."
