L. J. Kersley Nanette undertook an apprenticeship at the age of 12 in his hometown of Mauritius. Since 1979 he has grown to have a great passion for making model ships in teak and in Cedar in variable sizes ranging from 5 inches to 6 feet.
From 1998 he along with his wife, Deedra, has owned and operated a small Scale model ship business in St. George called The Bounty.
His latest pride and joy has been the making of 'The Deliverance' and ‘The Sea Venture’ in five feet made in Bermuda Cedar. He has recently enjoyed the privilege of accepting his Deliverance model as being used for the Bermuda to Jamestown stamp for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown.
“I have always wanted to know what it takes to make one of these ships. So as I went deeper into model making it made me appreciate how much time and effort it can consume.
Our model ships is not a craft that you see every day, they are rare art and over the years I have spent many hours learning different ways to work on plans and scale a model. It takes a lot of knowledge, ability, determination, patience, and love, to become a model maker. I have always enjoyed the 16th and 17th century models as I feel these models represent many cultures and are really fascinating pieces.
Being a model maker is not something you can master by just learning it from someone, it really is a labor of love. So from the age of 12 until now it has been my passion to make model ships.” |
