Born in Ottawa in 1947, Gregg Simpson grew up in the rainforest environment of the west coast. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Canada, the U.S., Europe and South America and is included in over 100 private and public collections internationally.

In May, 2000 he had a solo exhibition in a castle in Italy which became the subject of a BRAVO TV television documentary, A New Arcadia, The Art of Gregg Simpson.

Simpson works in the tradition of abstract surrealism. His paintings combine automatism with elements of landscape and the figure. They are improvised from simple charcoal outlines and then combined with the direct application of paint onto raw canvas. The meaning of the forms he creates changes with each viewer.

[Biography - Gregg Simpson - 2Ko]

GREGG SIMPSON Born in Ottawa in 1947, North Vancouver artist, Gregg Simpson, has been active in visual art since the mid-1960s. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Canada, the U.S., France, Italy, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Malaysia, and South America and is included in over 100 private and public collections in Europe, Asia and North America.. Simpson’s work is a synthesis of lyric abstraction with surrealist elements, heavily influenced by the B.C. landscape.

Simpson’s work has been studied in several at the Sorbonne in Paris, the Université Rabelais de Tours, France and the Accademia Tiberina in Rome. His work has been exhibited and published by two renowned art historians, both colleagues of Surrealism’s founder, André Breton: José Pierre in his landmark book, L’Univers Surréaliste, (Editions Somogy, 1983) and Sarane Alexandrian put Simpson’s work in his periodical, Supériore Inconnu in 1999. In 2000, he exhibited a retrospective of drawings from 1978-1999 in Seillans, France, the final home of the great surrealist, Max Ernst.

In May, 2000, he exhibited in Tuscany at the Fortezza di Montalcino, a 14th Century castle, documented in A New Arcadia, The Art of Gregg Simpson on BRAVO TV, now downloadable from www.greggsimpson.com “Shown widely across Europe, Simpson is part of the Surrealist and Lyric Abstraction movements. Referencing organic shapes, his oil and acrylic paintings on canvas and paper expertly utilize the single gesture to represent an entire form, delicately balancing soft effusions of colour against the frenetic energy of the mark. The resulting image possesses a surge of movement that suggests the unearthly, despite the hues which tie it inextricably to the terrestrial. Simpson’s paintings flux between the solid, rooted world and the ethereal. “ -Nicole Donnelly, Independent Curator, Mexico City, 2003
