“Sometimes, it is enough to sit, in order to advance. The famous respite of sustenance. The watershed, the moment of alveoli refill, with fresh air, necessary to the breath of the future. In this way, you won them all, forever. And if you're lucky and the world is busy with other things, no-one stops you until you reach your goal." writes the Romanian writer Florin Toma in relation to my recent art. It's been several months now since I have been living in tranquility, in a very small Romanian village, after having received my bfae in Painting from the National Arts University of Bucharest, and after having studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design (Georgia, US) and at the Ecole d'Art de Grenoble (Rhône-Alpes, France). Henceforth, I am completely devoted to painting, drawing, collage and assemblages. My paintings are generally the result either of an ardent interior conflict, or of a slow and methodic construction, which orders the countless transformations appearing during work. Attempting to combine both of these in a personal manner, behind this creative process I am interrogating the expressive properties of paint, marks, and materialities through physical and mostly poetical methods. The purely chromatic or gestural “dramas” and “conflicts” attract me greatly. In my studio there are diverse materials: crayons, charcoal, ink, dry pastels, oil pastels, watercolors, gouaches, temperas, acrylics, oils, wax, moddeling paste, textiles, wood, metal, all the objects recycled around the house. None of these is my favourite, but I especially like combing several of them. My paintings have been shown in solo exhibitions in Romania, Italy and the Uk (for a full bio please visit www.maiaoprea.ro/en), in numerous national and internatil group shows, and my artworks are part of private and public collections throughout Europe and the US ( Romania, USA, France, Italy, Germany, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Holland, Great Britain, Brazil, etc.) Feel free to contact me at maiastefana@gmail.com |
