These polychrome stained brick panels from the palace of Darío I in Susa. of the Persian aqueménide dynasty. Century V a.C., are two sfinges with winged lion body and human head. Animals with human head, I make their appearance in the neo-sumerian period, later in dynastic reliefs in the form of bulls with human head. These sfinges, guardian deities, carry a divine touch, their serene and benevolent expressions, confirm their condition as beneficial spirits. Inspired by the real canon, more idealized than realistic, according to the stereotypes established in all the brick reliefs in Susa, and in the stone reliefs of Persepolis, as the image of the greatness of the empire.
