"Naupaka and Kau'i"
Kanoa Aikala-Nelson
Carved Block Print - 9 Inches x 12 Inches
This picture is based on a tradition Hawaiian legend about the Naupaka plant which forms half flowers. One type of Naupaka grows by the ocean shore. The other type grows in the mountains. To sum it up, the ocean variety represents the male half or Kau'i. The mountain variety represents the female half or Naupaka. Naupaka was a chiefess and Kau'i was a commoner who fell in love. They were not allowed to marry because of their social status. Heartbroken Naupaka returned to the mountains and Kau'i returned to the ocean shore......never to see each other again. The two varieties of the Naupaka plant that grows in a half flower grew those half flowers to mourn their separation. It is said one day that Naupaka and Kau'i will be reunited and the flower will become whole. This picture represents that day.
