Originally this piece was developed as a expression of mechanical balance and beauty but it has since come to represent a deeper issue associated with modern society. Time is a constant presence that can be demanding and frustrating. Many have commented about never seeming to have enough time and the stress of deadlines and similar time restrictions. A common phrase is "there never seems to be enough time" and many are stressed by the numerous deadlines they are being asked to meet. Removing the hands from the face of the clock in this image represents taking control back from the clock and choosing to no longer let the clock be in control.
